The World Travel & Tourism Council’s outgoing CEO has urged President Donald Trump to encourage US job growth in tourism rather than inhibit it, with 5.5m jobs directly supported and 14.2 million jobs indirectly in the country in 2016.

The industry supports twice as many jobs as banking (2.7 million) and nearly six times as many jobs as automotive manufacturing (987,000), and the WTTC feels the Trump administration’s anti-tourism actions such as the travel ban and proposal to eliminate Brand USA would cost US jobs.


A wider WTTC report based on data from 27 countries compared travel and tourism to eight other industries, including construction, financial services and automotive manufacturing, and found the travel industry’s GDP is projected to grow 4% per year during the next decade.
