Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson recently suggested that now his company is moving into the homesharing space, it will offer a “better product” for than Airbnb and its peers, due to Marriott’s brands, service, and loyalty, hinting at a time when traditional hotel brands will offer their own short-term rentals.

Marriott joins fellow hotel brands Hyatt, AccorHotels, Choice and Wyndham in the vacation rental business.

Hilton CEO Christopher Nassetta, however, has said that Hilton has decided not to move into this space, having  researched it for years, although he is not ruling it out forever.

This article asks the view of the American Hotel & Lodging Association – which includes Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Choice, and Wyndham as members – but which has been long locked into a battle with Airbnb over regulation, non-payment of taxes and homesharing creating housing shortages, on whether its own members moving into this space causes any problems.
