Alipay has released a report on Chinese tourist spending habits, Outbound Chinese Tourism and Consumption Trends, including the preference for and expectation of mobile payment, across dining out, shopping and transportation, with Chinese traveller transactions split 30% cash, 42% bank card and 28% mobile payments. This compares with non-Chinese tourists: 44% cash, 52% bank card, and 5% mobile.

63% of Chinese consumers used mobile payments for shopping, including airport duty free, 62% dining and 58% for sites and tourist destinations and the majority expect mobile payment to be available everywhere.

Average spend by outbound Chinese tourists is expected to reach $5,715 per person in 2018, up 3% on 2017.
