New data from credit and debit card analysts shows that last year in the US, consumers spent more money on Airbnb stays than with Hilton and its brands, and almost as much as they did with Marriott.

12% of major hotel customers also booked with Airbnb last year, and Airbnb made up nearly 20% of all spending on vacation accommodation in the US. Figures are based on host and guest fees, not gross bookings, but does include Experiences, while hotel spending will include in-room extras.

Last year Airbnb expanded its bookings to include boutique hotels and has recently acquired the last-minute hotel booking site HotelTonight.
