According to figures from the World Travel & Tourism Council, the travel and tourism sector grew by 3.9% last year, contributing a record $8.8 trillion and 319 million jobs to the global economy.
This makes travel and tourism the second fastest growing sector in the world, close behind manufacturing which was up 4%. Healthcare grew by 3.1%, and IT and financial services both hit 1.7%.
Travel and tourism is now responsible for one in ten of all jobs globally and one in five of all new jobs created over the last five years. The sector is forecast to contribute 100 million new jobs globally over the next 10 years, totalling 421 million jobs by 2029.
