The summer of 2017 has seen overtourism become a major global issue, and Venice and Barcelona have been among the cities particularly affected, with overcrowding and backlash from local residents.

Lessons that can be learnt, according to Skift, include: low prices bring more visitors and currently, lots of cruise trips; highlighting new neighborhoods brings businesses that don’t necessarily benefit locals, such as hotels; travel companies don’t always act in a responsible manner during periods of growth, including hotel chains, airlines, cruise lines and roomsharing services; and local governments must insist on limitations on tourism, through taxation and tourist caps.
