Visitors to the UK from China, Australia, India & the GCC particularly favour staying in serviced apartments, allowing the flaxibility to cook for themselves and stay in family groups.
In 2017, a mix of overseas visitors from those markets and also the USA, the UK’s most valuable market for tourism spend, led to a record year for inbound tourism, with visits from China alone up 29% and Chinese spend up 35% to £694 million.
Visits from the US were up 13% to the highest since 2000 with spend a record £3.6 billion, while records were also set for visits and spend from the GCC and India. There were 1.1 million visits from Australia in 2017, up 11%, with spending up 13% to £1.2 billion.
There were a record 25.6 million visits from the EU, with spend of £10 billion, contributing to an overall record breaking 39.2 million inbound visits to the UK and regions in 2017, up 4%, and a 9% growth in spend to £24.5 billion.
