Premier Inn owner Whitbread has announced up to 6,000 job cuts across its hotels and restaurants, almost 20% of its workforce. The bulk of the cuts will be at the Premier Inn budget hotel chain, while another 1,500 jobs will go at its Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurant chains from November.

About 20,000 of the group’s 35,000-strong workforce are currently on flexible furlough.

Whitbread has been hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis, with like-for-like sales down 77.6% in March and April.
