Omran, the tourism investment and development arm of the government, has said that investment in Oman’s tourism and hospitality is to be around $50 billion over the next couple of decades, part of its Tourism 2040 Strategy.

12% will come from government, while the balance will come from the private sector.It aims to boost tourist arrivals into the country, aiming for 11.5 million including 5 million overseas visitors, build up the tourism sector, and generate employment in the industry for Omanis.

There will be a focus on airport construction, as well as creating 14 million room nights by 2040, needing 80,000 new units – 33,000 hotel rooms, 17,000 serviced apartments and 30,000 second homes.

The country is seeking to employ 500,000 individuals in the sector by 2040, more than three times the number now, although getting nationals to take a career in hotel services is a “challenge”.
