In its interim report on the sharing economy, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Tourism is considering recommending the statutory registration of all visitor accommodation in the UK, to bring hotel operators and sharing economy providers such as Airbnb onto a level playing field.

The report, which coincides with the start of English Tourism Week, suggests a registration scheme might work as it already does for premises selling food and drink, and would provide transparency around visitor accommodation and facilitate enforcing regulation around quality standards, security and safety.

The APPG inquiry was begun in 2016 and consultation with representatives from the sharing economy as well as from hotels, B&Bs and self-catering operators was restarted this year. The final report is due before the end of 2018.
