Scotland’s Tourism Secretary Fiona Hylsop has said that the Scottish Government will bring forward proposals to introduce a so-called “tourist tax”, currently set for £2/night for the first week, on short-term hotel and Airbnb stays.

Edinburgh Council supports the tax and anticipates income of up to £14.6m could be raised to support tourism and infrastructure in the city, and has included this in its budget for next year, although the tax may actually not be in place before 2021.
