BD Hotels is focusing on growing its first brand, Pod Hotels, which are currently available in New York; two hotels with two more to open soon, and Washington, D.C. with another planned for Los Angeles by spring 2019.
This is not the only brand to capitalise on the small guest-room trend in the city, where other micro hotel brands include Yotel, Arlo Hotels and the newly-opened Public New York Hotel.
This trend for micro hotel rooms built on futuristic high-end design principles allow developers to build a third more rooms in one building’s footprint without dropping guest prices by the same amount, and meets the current movement among guests to spend more time in lobbies for entertainment, socialising and enjoying downtime. This communal space also offers revenue growth, as a space for performances, event space or exhibitions. Smaller rooms can also be environmentally friendly and require less energy consumption.
BD Hotels co-founder Richard Born thinks the days of the purely leisure or business traveler have changed, and that smaller, efficient, high-tech, design-led environments can meet the requirements of all travellers.
