Hotel brands are constantly evolving, consolidating and competing, which has given rise to the options of growing even bigger, specialising or, as in the case of Meliá Hotels described in this article, getting faster.

The largest hotel company in Spain with more than 370 hotels in 40+ countries under eight brands, Meliá is now focusing on travellers mixing business with vacation, and looking to attract European tourists who traditionally used to holiday in northern Africa. It is also concentrating on Latin America, the Americas generally, Southeast Asia – especially China where the chain has launched its Pengyou by Meliá initiative – and is soon to launch in Iran.

In 2016, Meliá added more than 24 properties and signed 18 hotels in 10 countries, looking to add between 28 and 30 properties this year.
