India’s leading OTA, MakeMyTrip, has released its financial results, showing it has continued to take online market share at the expense of hotel direct bookings. MakeMyTrip and its sister brand GoIbibo together form the country’s largest online travel group.
This is despite hoteliers fighting back about commission they say has risen from 15-18% to closer to 45%. There followed boycotts and the threat of a nationwide protest, such as hotels cancelling and rebooking guests on arrival and bypassing the OTAs. After a week of this, MakeMyTrip Group promised to cap commissions at 22% in some cities.
MakeMyTrip’s figures for the last three months of 2018 were up 27.1% for rooms booked alone, although it remains unprofitable. It has recently added homestay options to the site as an alternative to hotels.
