A report comparing how national capitals have been damaged by Covid-19 shows London has suffered the biggest fall in job opportunities among Europe’s biggest cities, and is also among five of the biggest cities in western Europe – along with Berlin, Madrid, Paris and Rome – that have recorded a larger drop in ads for new jobs than elsewhere in their own countries.

The world’s largest jobs website, Indeed, said that job postings in London have plummeted by 50% on last year, compared to a 42% decline for the rest of the UK, with retail, hospitality and leisure hardest hit. Madrid suffered the second-biggest decline, at 46%, with job postings elsewhere across Spain down by 39%. Most of this damage is caused by more people working from home and not using retail or hospitality.
