Our first keynote speaker at the exuberant ASAP Convention this week, the renowned travel industry expert Simon Calder, pulled no punches when outlining his predictions for yesterday’s UK General Election. And he followed with his thoughts on how this and other global socio-economic factors might impact the hospitality sector over the short and longer term.

Not everything he said was a direct consequence of a Conservative win, of course. Whether you like him or loathe him, even Boris Johnson could not be responsible for Vesuvius erupting, or a possible attack of brain-eating amoebae!

But this is one industry which will be hugely affected – both positively and negatively – by Brexit, which was one of the key battlegrounds in the election, and which looks to be pushed ahead immediately now, beginning within weeks.

It was even more of a landslide victory than Simon predicted. And whatever voters’ reasons, we must all be ready for the challenges – and opportunities – of the next few weeks, months and years.

From currency fluctuations to concerns around losing EU employees, from tougher border controls and visa restrictions, to where people are choosing to take holidays both domestically and internationally, all of us will be feeling the impact pretty quickly. But if we pull together and stay strong, we can make this a time of opportunity and growth.

Good luck everybody – it’s certainly going to get interesting!
