Since no more than six people can meet up indoors or outdoors in England, holidays between large groups of friends or families cannot go ahead.

This comes as many have turned to staycations for the half-term holidays, with quarantine restrictions on traditional destinations such as Spain, France and Portugal.

More than 25% of all self-catered accommodation in the UK is for more than six people, and the forthcoming booking cancellations have been described as “carnage”.

The new measures will be enforced by £100 fines, rising to £3,200 for repeat offenders.
