According to new data from Euromonitor, Heraklion is Europe’s fastest growing tourism destination for 2017, welcoming 11% more visitors so far this year, compared with last. Athens was second in Europe, up 10%, with Artvin in north-eastern Turkey third at more than 9% increase in tourists, especially from Georgia.
Globally, Denpasar, the capital of Bali, saw the largest increase in arrivals up more than 50%, with visitors to Jakarta up almost 50% and Delhi more than a third.
The research also illustrates the growing dominance of Asian destinations, with six cities in the top 10 for predicted tourism growth by 2025 – Hong Kong first – with London and Paris forced out.
The top five most visited cities in the Americas are New York Miami, Las Vegas and Los Angeles and then Cancun in Mexico.
