According to ABTA, more than 5,000 people fell victim to holiday booking fraud in 2018, with total losses amounting to around £7m – an average of £1,380 each.

Transactions included bogus airline tickets (accounting for 53%), accommodation (one in four, often for accommodation that was unavailable) and organised tours, as sophisticated fraudsters targeted people looking for good deals. Spain and France were among the destinations most commonly affected.

Tips have been issued including checking the security of website addresses, conducting thorough online research, sticking with registered trade and insurance bodies, paying by credit card and checking T&Cs.
