The San Francisco Planning Commission is the latest to tighten regulations on the rental of furnished apartments on short term leases, especially targeting the “corporate rentals”, in a bid to disincentivise landlords from leasing out portions of buildings in this way.

It follows revelations that a 60-unit development approved for rental housing was being leased by lodging startup Sonder as intermediate length occupancy housing. The new regulations would cap the number of units in San Francisco that can be used as corporate rentals at 1,000.
