A Cork senator has called on the Irish Government to introduce legislation aimed at restricting Airbnb from renting out properties across the country while it is in level 5 restrictions, saying it is “running amok” by facilitating blatant breaches, including parties in rural areas.

He opposes a phenomenon of weekend house parties where houses are rented and they are becoming drinking parties for two nights, such as one recent case where seven people from different households were discovered sharing a house in Kinsale.

He described current listings as for leisure and leisure only, with a major issue in lack of enforcement.

In response, the Minister for local government and planning said there are already “very stringent” regulations in place, and people are now aware they could have a criminal record for breaching level 5 restrictions.
