Following more than a decade of rapid growth, travel to the US from China is falling, down 5.7% in 2018 to 2.9 million visitors, down year-on-year for the first time since 2003.

This is largely due to the trade war between the two, with the US now imposing a 25% tariff on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports, and China retaliating on $60 billion of US imports.

Economic uncertainty in China has also affected travellers at the lower end of the market, who are now vacationing closer to home.

Tourist agencies across the US are stepping up their activity in an effort to reverse the trend.
