UK Green Party MP Caroline Lucas is the latest to call for new powers for England’s local councils, so they can regulate Airbnb and other short-term letting services which are making the housing situation “intolerable.”

She also wants to see councils enforcing a 90-day cap on lettings each year, and says “There needs to be a level playing field”.

A report called Impact of Short-Term Lets released in January shows there may be half a million properties fewer in the private rented sector as landlords move into short-term lets in the face of reduced interest relief on mortgages and a 3% surcharge on stamp duty.
