Berlin’s assembly decided last week to overturn its April 2016 law banning almost all landlords from letting their apartments to short-term visitors, or risk a maximum €100,000 fine.

From May 1 2018, owner-occupiers can rent out their own home as many days as they wish, and to rent out second homes for up to 90 days a year, based on conditions including acquiring a permit from their borough – which will be hard for a second home. Permits will also be required for apartments untenanted for more than three months. The maximum penalty for breaking the rules is now €500,000.
