ITV this week aired a Tonight news piece about Airbnb.

‘Airbnb: The True Cost?’ explored the consequences of the company’s growth, including communities feeling overwhelmed by the influx of transient visitors, and the effect of short-term letting on the UK’s housing crisis.

With UK listings through the platform growing threefold over three years to around 230,000, the Scottish Government has given councils new powers from 2021 around more stringent safety regulations and taxation, and  the programme featured Karen Buck MP, Chair of the APPG on Short Lets, calling for a register of all properties which are being rented through sites like Airbnb. It also focused on the issues in Edinburgh, London and Bath.
