A Harvard study has suggested that people with names that suggest they are black are being discriminated against on AirBnB in America, one of 190 countries where hosts across the world offer more than 2m rooms.

More than 6,000 hosts surveyed in five cities were asked to react to identical requests sent from names that sounded either African-American or traditionally white. The latter group were 16% more likely to get positive responses.

AirBnB admitted it faced “significant challenges” over the issue.
