Airbnb has written to the SEC to seek a change to its Rule 701 which governs ownership of equity in companies, so that homeowners hosting on its platform can also own a piece of its business.

The US $31-billion company wants to see a new kind of shareholder class created for workers who participate in gig economy companies. Uber and Lyft have shown a similar interest in building a stronger bond between themselves and those powering their sharing economy platforms.
