Following pressure from consumer organisations and the European Commission, Airbnb has changed the way it displays property prices in the region, so consumers see the complete, total price upfront.

Airbnb’s initial price display includes the total price, including room rate, cleaning fees, service fees, and applicable local taxes; Booking.com already shows total costs, including VAT and city tax.

Airbnb has issued a statement about its changes across Europe, Building a More Transparent Platform, but research shows that this only applies in the EU; the same European properties viewed from another part of the world do not disclose occupancy taxes and fees until a later screen in the process.

Expedia-owned Vrbo is even less transparent than Airbnb and Booking.com, only showing the total rate when users click through to further pages.
