Since COVID-19 has obliterated Airbnb revenues across the globe, the platform has started asking guests to send “kindness cards” that include cash donations to their former hosts.

The new tool seeks contributions from former guests, with 100% of the proceeds going to the hosts.

However this has been met by swift backlash from people on Twitter who say they’re also struggling to save money amid the pandemic, and questioning why it should be their responsibility to support hosts.

Hosts themselves hit out at Airbnb when it implemented cancellation policies at the onset of COVID-19, without reference to them and costing them even more money. Airbnb has said in March it would spend $250 million to reimburse hosts for guests’ cancellations. However, as more than one-third of hosts allegedly manage at least 25 properties, further backlash came from guests refusing to contribute to the mortgage for anyone’s second house.

Airbnb has not yet responded to a request for comment.
