Rumours of an Accor-IHG merger have surfaced once again, with France’s Le Figaro reporting that in June, Accor set up an internal task force to consider the opportunity.

The news comes as Accor was downgraded to junk status by ratings agency S&P Global.

An Accor-IHG merger would strengthen the combined portfolio in the budget space, a segment predicted to recover more quickly from the current downturn, as well as making geographical sense. It would also create the world’s biggest hotel company, with more than 1.6 million rooms.
