In the aftermath of the largest data breach of 2018, affecting Marriott International’s Starwood reservation system, cybersecurity experts warn that protecting customer information and technology systems will only get harder.

Marriott estimated the breach involved about 18.5 million encrypted passport numbers and about 5.25 million unencrypted, as well as about 9.1 million encrypted payment card numbers.

Now there are new calls for the industry including short-term rentals, hotels, serviced apartments and the sharing economy, to tackle likely future issues affecting customer data.
