Airbnb has frozen 80% of its listings and guest reservations in Japan, and has established a $10 million fund to cover the additional expenses of those affected, with plans to offer full refunds.

It had warned hosts it would delist any not registering for licences under strict new rules which come in on June 15, although Japan’s tourism agency has already said they must cancel reservations made with unregistered listings two weeks before the deadline.

Airbnb has now deactivated all Japanese listings without government registration, reported to have left only 13,800 live.
