A new study of 52 destinations worldwide from ComparetheMarket.com shows that hotel prices are sometimes lower on average per night than local Airbnb properties, and are significantly lower in Mallorca and Venice.

Other savings are made across California, especially in Santa Cruz, San Diego and San Jose, where cities have limited the number of listings to control local housing stock.

Six destination cities saw the totals only around $10 different either way, in Berlin, Boston, Oakland, Bologna, Dublin and Melbourne.
