Responding to a tweet by comments by City of Edinburgh Council leader Adam McVey that a tax would be introduced in the city “in the next 12 months”, UKHospitality has repeated its belief that a tourist tax in Edinburgh, or elsewhere in the UK, could be “disastrous for hotels and hospitality”, and should not be considered without the full involvement of the sector.

On top of the proposed levy of £1 or £2 a day, VAT on hotel rooms in most EU countries is about half of the 20% rate in the UK.
