A new Hitwise report from on mobile travel trends shows that Airbnb was the most-installed mobile app in September in the United States across the App Store and Google Play, followed on both by Booking.com.

Expedia came in 5th via Apple and 4th via Google, while Hotels.com came 9th on both.

59% of travel app users are shown to be female, compared to 53% of travellers in general being women, and app users are also more likely to take two or three short trips rather than one long one. Also shown by the data on mobile usage is that people go directly to the travel site they intend to use, either from within an app or because they know which site they want to browse, whereas desktop users come via Google, Gmail, or Facebook with YouTube the fifth-most popular starting point.
