Thai-owned Austrian hotel chain Vienna House is looking at moving into the Irish market, taking on alternative accommodation providers such as Airbnb.

Looking to appeal to the modern traveller, the new ‘Vienna House R.evo’ will offer hotel rooms, family rooms, studio apartments and rented office space under one roof, and describes itself as offering a ‘tribrid’ mix of hotel, hostel and serviced apartment.

It has plans to open three hotels a year, and will open this year in Munich with short-term plans for Glasgow, Bangkok, Budapest and Hamburg and an eye on Dublin, expanding through a franchise model.

Recent figures proved demand for alternative accommodation in Ireland is strengthening, with Airbnb generating around €500m through guest spending for local economies around the country in 2017.
