The Irish Government has launched TravelWise, a free smartphone app for iOS and Android offering user-friendly worldwide travel advice and consular information for Irish residents travelling abroad.

It covers major events such as Euro 2016 or the Rio Olympics, and is useful for those going to higher risk destinations with advice around security risk, sensitive local laws and customs, how to dress, travelling as a woman and local views on homosexuality and alcohol. The app also works for inbound tourists, for instance explaining to Chinese visitors that they should exercise respect when entering Irish churches and to avoid casually snapping photographs of children and people in general – and where to find the best nightlife.
