In his speech at general assembly of the Greek Tourism Confederation SETE on Thursday, the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced that the planned tax on overnight stays in hotels and room rentals will come into effect in 2018.

The Prime Minister also underlined that tourism will be at the forefront of Greece’s “new era of growth and optimism” , as it provides employment to over 200 professions.

In contrast, the president of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), Andreas Andreadis, referred to the so-called “occupancy tax” as a “tombstone” for tourism businesses.
