Budget hotels including Premier Inn and Travelodge are aiming at the corporate pound with custom-made kingsize beds and power showers, meaning employees of big companies, accustomed to high-end bookings, do not encounter a drop in quality when they trade down to a budget option.

Premier Inn and Travelodge say around half of the FTSE 100 index of Britain’s biggest firms have business accounts with them, as well as thousands of small firms.

Recent research shows that mid-range and budget hotels accounted for more business trips than luxury hotels last year, and last year, the male-female ratio was 64/36, while the proportion of younger business travellers had more than doubled to 23%, which has helped drive a shift towards more budget hotel stays in the UK.
