Facebook has quietly launched a City Guides feature in its app for booking hotels and restaurants, meaning some venues already in Facebook’s destination-oriented guides with messaging and calling features now have a Book Now button to make reservations directly with the hotel.

Facebook’s latest move into the travel ecosystem could be seen as a challenge to Google’s Trips, which features “Things to do” and the ability to create “Day plans” in a given locale, but no way to make direct bookings – yet.

City Guides is Facebook’s way of getting into travel planning and, importantly, booking; and this sector will evolve quickly as Facebook joins TripAdvisor, Google, Foursquare and others in the space.
