Expedia revealed late last year that the company is on the point of purchasing the travel-sharing website Homeaway, making its way into the sharing economy.

This shows the strength of the alternative lodging industry, described by Dara Khosrowshahi, president and CEO of Expedia, as being positioned “where independent hotels were 15-20 years ago.”

Expedia also announced plans to offer bookings for rail services in the near future, showing the company’s intention to cover any and all travel booking options.
