According to preliminary UNWTO data, Chinese tourists spent more than ever in 2016 as the outbound market with the biggest spending power.

The country’s international tourism spending grew by $11 billion to $261 billion last year, with the number of travellers going overseas – mainly to Japan, Korea and Thailand, and long-haul destinations such as the US and Europe – rising 6% to 135 million.

In second place was the US, with overseas tourism spendup 8% year on year to $122 billion.
