Marriott’s Chinese website and mobile app are being shut down probably for around a week, at the request of the Chinese government, after a recent Mandarin-language customer survey sent to Marriott loyalty members listed Chinese-claimed regions Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan as countries.

The shutdown, just before the start of the upcoming Chinese New Year on February 16, will have a direct impact on the company’s ability to gather bookings from the world’s largest travel market, since Chinese consumers rely heavily on mobile apps to do all of their commercial transactions.

Marriott issued an apology to the Chinese government, and an investigation into the incident is being launched by the company into how it happened, as well as one by local Shanghai authorities into a possible violation of China’s cybersecurity and advertisement laws.
