According to hotel industry experts speaking at the HotelsWorld 2017 conference in Sydney, some of the key issues with Airbnb, Homeaway and other sharing economy homestay platforms include an inability to police all the hosts, safety concerns, and disruption as the hotel industry moves to compete in the sharing community.

Dream Hotels Group Managing Director Kevin Wallace discussed how a lot of corporates are disallowing people to use Airbnb due to personal and fire safety, and expects hotels to look to fill that space again.

It was also discussed that some homestay platforms will have to offer more professional delivery, and that hotels are also looking to tap into the “local experiences” trends to take on Airbnb’s Trips product. The ‘lifestyle hotel’ is starting to rival homestay and even cheaper hotel groups like youth hostels are now beating Airbnb on price.
