American Airlines has admitted that it gave too many pilots time off in December, and is saying it can fix the problem by coaxing more pilots to work during the busy holiday period by paying them 150% of their hourly pay rate, although the airline’s pilot union is warning American may not find enough pilots.

The problem which was blamed on a computer glitch could affect as any as 15,000 flights from from Dallas-Fort Worth International, Boston, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City and Charlotte, during the second half of the month.

 

In a statement, American said passengers should not be concerned, saying it does not expect to cancel flights for the holiday season.

 

 

 

 

Ryanair disclosed a similar problem in September, but when they did not think they could fix the problem quickly, cancelled many flights over several weeks, calling it a “mess of our own making.”
