Airbnb is fighting to stay alive in the biggest rental market in the US, by hitting back with a free-speech lawsuit only hours after the New York Governor signed a bill into law.

The new ruling, set to help prevent the proliferation of illegal, unregulated hotels, will fine residents who rent out their apartments for short-term stays 30 days or less as much as $7,500 – although people can rent out a room in their house or apartment as long as they are also staying there.

Airbnb is looking for a judge to declare the law unconstitutional and block the state and the city from enforcing it.
