At a gathering of more than 200 mayors in Indianapolis, Airbnb officials suggested they could collect taxes on behalf of the cities to appease some of the negativity around the home-sharing’s operations across the US, where the company has been accused of disrupting hotels’ share of tourism dollars, government tax collections and housing.

In Indianapolis Airbnb hosts are required by law to levy a 10% innkeeper’s tax to pay towards city tourism marketing but enforcing compliance among unregulated homeowners has proved difficult.
