Airbnb has removed a further 2,233 listings from its platform in New York, which represents about 5% in the city, to weed out hosts who violate its policies. They had previously removed 1,500 units in response to criticism.

Officials in New York and San Francisco are concerned that the limited supply of houses that would otherwise be rented out or sold are being listed for tourists on Airbnb instead at the expense of residents.

Airbnb states that 96% of New York City Airbnb hosts who rent out an entire home only advertise one listing, and that the median Airbnb annual earnings for each is $5,474.
