According to survey analysis by Morgan Stanley, the use of Airbnb is growing faster than industry commentators predicted, but hotels are the main losers in the new accommodation war.

Airbnb’s penetration of the accommodation sector is around 18-19%, up from 12% last year, with 49% of users shifting stays away from “traditional hotels” .

Almost one in five business and leisure travellers have been hosted by an Airbnb member over the last year, thanks to a high traveller awareness at 75% of consumers, and even higher user satisfaction rates of 93%.

But rather than being hit by the situation, Expedia, Booking.com and other OTAs are increasing their own capability to handle alternative accommodation such as serviced apartments and homestays.
